Antique Caucasian Shirvan Runner (7'2 X 3'3)
Antique Caucasian Shirvan Runner (7'2 X 3'3)
This exceptionally beautiful antique Caucasian Shirvan runner features a rich indigo blue field adorned with five distinct medallions. Two of the medallions showcase octagonal forms filled with geometric floral motifs linked to the Moghan Kazak tradition, while the others vary in design and color. The bottom and top medallions exhibit vibrant polychromy with shades of green, blue, red, pink, orange, and more, creating a stunning visual balance. The centerpiece medallion is especially breathtaking—both in palette and design—so unique and expressive that it defies full description. Scattered throughout the field are around 38 charming birds and animals in a variety of hues, suggesting the weaver was not just a craftsman, but a storyteller. The runner is framed by a rust-brown main border with star and leaf motifs, flanked by ivory guard borders featuring floral and leaf designs.
This piece is in excellent condition for its age, with minimal wear and a few very old, expertly done restorations. The wool is of superb quality, tightly knotted, and all dyes are undoubtedly organic, offering rich, natural shades throughout. All edges and ends remain remarkably intact and original. Museum-quality in both craftsmanship and preservation, it’s estimated that this runner took around 1,200 hours to complete—a testament to the care and skill behind its creation.
