A stupendous example of a rare room size caucasian flatweave, this soumak carpet features eight octagonal medallions on blue field, a tan field with four octagonal medallions, hooked and floral geometric elements. The rug is framed with a Kufesque main border guarded by running dog border in tan and brown.
This rug has one of the best known and beautiful of the caucasian soumak compositions: large, flattened irregular octagons in blue, flanked by yellow/tan octagons. This format is not found in any caucasian pile rugs, it is a signature design of south caucasus flat woven art.
This soumak carpet has wear throughout, but more wear on its outer edges than in the center. It seems that the rug had a lot less traffic on its center then border areas. All dyes are organic and mineral. There are restorations with reinforcements mostly on the border areas, but the overall condition of the carpet, considering its age is fine without any construction issues. Estimated time to hand make this soumak is about 5000 hours!
