Antique Serapi (14'1 X 10'8)
Antique Serapi (14'1 X 10'8)
This impressive antique Serapi carpet, handwoven in northwest Iran’s Heriz region, showcases the exceptional craftsmanship for which the area is renowned. Known for producing some of the most decorative rugs in history, Heriz carpets are distinguished by their durable structure, featuring a single cotton warp and double cotton weft woven with Turkish knots. At the heart of this Serapi lies a striking indigo-blue central medallion, framed by angular vines and spandrels, all set within an elegant samovar border. The bold geometric motifs add a sense of grandeur without overwhelming the composition, allowing the design to maintain a balanced and refined aesthetic. The rich rust-red field contrasts beautifully with the subdued tones of the corners, creating a harmonious interplay of hues.
Crafted from hand-spun wool dyed with natural elements, this rug will develop a stunning patina over time. While Heriz and Serapi carpets are not typically known for fine knotting, this particular piece is finely woven, making it an exceptional example of its kind. Expert restorations, including some repiling, have been meticulously carried out, yet the original sides and ends remain intact. The estimated time required to hand-knot this masterpiece is approximately 6,500 hours.
