Antique Tribal Afshar (6'5 X 5'4)
Antique Tribal Afshar (6'5 X 5'4)
A remarkable example of Afshar tribal weaving, this rug features five floral motifs elegantly arranged on a red brick field. Adding to its uniqueness, each corner appears to display a human—or possibly monkey—figure. The central motif is surrounded by a design of four additional flowers with leaves, positioned adjacent to the border. The rug is framed by two narrow main borders and a single guard border.
This piece shows wear consistent with its age and use but has no restorations. The dyes used are entirely organic, and the wool is hand-spun and tightly pounded. The ends are secured, and the sides retain their original multi-colored bindings, a hallmark of the Afshar tribe’s craftsmanship. Remarkably, creating this rug by hand would have required approximately 1,300 hours of work!
