Handmade Antique Farahan (6'6 X 4'10)
Handmade Antique Farahan (6'6 X 4'10)
An intricate antique Farahan rug showcasing the classic Herati design. The Herati motif features four “fish-head” or leaf patterns arranged around a subdued orange diamond-shaped creeper, with adjacent leaves scrolling around a central flowerhead. This formation repeats throughout the field, creating a beautifully detailed all-over pattern. The rug is framed by a main border of leaf and flower motifs, flanked by two guard borders. A narrow plain ivory square perimeter subtly boxes the rug, while the impressive corner designs add to its unique character.
This rug is in good overall condition, with a few barely noticeable worn spots. The pile is evenly low, consistent with its age and use, and all sides and ends remain original. The color palette has resulted in a striking phenomenon known as Abrash, characterized by subtle variations in color due to natural dye inconsistencies or the introduction of new wool batches during weaving. This effect, highly prized by connoisseurs, enhances the rug’s uniqueness and charm. The estimated time to handcraft this exquisite piece is approximately 1,400 hours.
