This rare Baotou rug was handwoven in China. These carpets are typically found in deep blue hues with natural abrash (subtle variations in color that develop over time) and are often nearly square in shape. The central "tarantula" design may represent a Mongol talisman meant to ward off tarantulas, though it could simply be a geometric motif. Aside from a section about 13 inches wide at one end where the color has naturally shifted over time, the rug remains in very good condition.
