Vintage Persian Mahal (10'3 X 8'6)
Vintage Persian Mahal (10'3 X 8'6)
This carpet, known as a Mahal, was likely crafted by the renowned European design company, Ziegler & Co. During the second half of the 19th century, the demand for room-sized carpets with soft colors grew significantly across Europe and North America. In response, Ziegler & Co. established workshops throughout the rug-weaving regions of Persia starting in 1870, producing some of the most exquisite masterpieces of the era.
This particular rug was woven in one of those centers, Mahallat — a village situated in the southern part of the Arak region. Connoisseurs may recognize subtle references to the Sultanabad family of rugs, which were also produced by Ziegler & Co. in the same area by master weavers. The rug features an open-field design with a rust-orange background and a modest, non-dominant central medallion, skillfully simplifying what could have been a more intricate design. A few minor, barely noticeable restorations have been carried out, and the carpet remains in excellent condition.
